The most convenient starting bases are Gizycko and Wilkasy in the north and Mikolajki in the middle of the trail. Starting in the north, you sail with the flow of popularity southwards, towards the narrow, scenic ribbon lakes. Before you plan your route, glance at the wind forecast for the next 5 to 6 days and set your direction so that the longest open crossings are downwind rather than upwind.

Distances are approximate, and in light wind you will sail them slower than the map suggests. That is why we leave day 4 as a buffer: if the weather was kind, you spend it in a wild bay, and if not, you use it to make up lost time.
The best stops along the route
Mikolajki is the informal capital of Masuria: a large marina, restaurants and a promenade right by the water. Gizycko tempts with its swing bridge and the Boyen Fortress. In the south, narrow Beldany and the area around Ruciane-Nida have a different feel, quieter, wilder, closer to the forest.
The biggest adventure is often the crossing of Sniardwy, the largest lake in Poland. It is open water that demands respect and good weather.
