The character of this water is entirely different from the large, open lakes. The water is sheltered by forest, the stretches between lakes are short, and traffic is much lighter than on the popular Great Masurian Lakes trail. How the locks work
The Augustow Canal is mainly the realm of motorboats and houseboats, because the waterway leads through more than a dozen historic locks. A lock is a chamber with gates at each end that equalizes the water level between stretches of the canal: you sail in, the staff close the gates, the level rises or falls, and you sail on at a new height. Locking is one of the more interesting moments of the trip, and at the same time a chance to see 19th-century engineering still in action up close.
For the crew it means a calm pace and planning stops around the locks' working hours. This is a trip more about contemplation than covering kilometers, which suits the character of the forest perfectly.
Which boat to choose and whether you need a licence
On the lakes and the canal, houseboats and motor yachts work best: they offer comfort, pass calmly through the locks and are simple to handle. Good news for beginners: most of these boats fall within the limits that allow sailing without a licence, that is motor yachts up to 13 m with an engine power up to 10 kW or a speed up to 15 km/h.
