The Vistula Lagoon is the most underrated sailing ground in Poland: formally the sea, in practice a sheltered, shallow lagoon free of the crowds you know from the Great Masurian Lakes. You can start a charter in Krynica Morska, Tolkmicko or Kąty Rybackie, and within two days see both the Spit and the hills above Frombork from the water. What sailing the Vistula Lagoon is like
The Vistula Lagoon is classed as internal sea waters: the narrow Vistula Spit separates it from the open Baltic, and since 2022 the canal cut through the Spit gives boats their own entrance from the sea, without the detour through the Pillau Strait. The water is vast but shallow: depths outside the fairways often stay under 2-3 m, and reeds and shoals line the shores.
For a sailor this means two things. First, the waves are short and steep, because shallow water "stands up" quickly in stronger wind: conditions can change within an hour and you need to read the forecast like at sea. Second, people sail here mainly centreboard yachts or boats with shallow draft, and approach fairways to ports must be taken seriously.

The port network is dense for such an intimate body of water: passages between harbours rarely exceed 3-4 hours.

For a longer trip you can also enter the Elbląg river up to the city of Elbląg, or combine the cruise with the inclined planes of the Elbląg Canal, which begin right at the Lagoon side.
What licences you need
The Vistula Lagoon is sea water, so sea rules apply: the Polish sailor certificate (żeglarz jachtowy) lets you skipper a sailing yacht up to 12 m in length on internal sea waters, which covers the whole Lagoon. A sample 2-3 day route
- Day 1: start in Kąty Rybackie, sail along the Spit to Krynica Morska, spend the afternoon on the Baltic-side beach and overnight in the marina.
- Day 2: head for Frombork across the middle of the Lagoon, visit the cathedral hill, overnight below the cathedral.
- Day 3: a morning passage to Tolkmicko and back to the Spit, with time to spare for returning the boat.
The wind on the Lagoon can be fickle: with westerly winds the water near the Spit stays calmer, with north-easterlies it is better to keep to the southern shore. Leave a spare day in your plan.

Prices depend on the boat, the season and the operator: in the summer peak, rates for cabin centreboard yachts usually start from a few hundred zlotys per day, and larger ballasted boats cost correspondingly more. Do I need a licence for the Vistula Lagoon?
Yes, these are sea waters. The Polish sailor certificate covers sailing yachts up to 12 m in length on internal sea waters, including the whole Vistula Lagoon. Without a licence, choose a skippered cruise.
Can you sail out of the Lagoon onto the open Baltic?
Yes. Since 2022 the canal through the Vistula Spit lets boats reach the Gulf of Gdańsk without crossing the border. Just remember that outside the Lagoon the zone limits of your licence and true sea conditions apply.
When is the season on the Vistula Lagoon?
