Sea chartering on the Baltic: licences, starting ports and your first sea cruise

A Baltic sea charter needs different licences and planning than lake sailing. Check the certificates, starting ports, season and how to prepare a first cruise.

A sea charter on the Baltic is the natural next step after a few seasons on the lakes: bigger yachts, longer passages and sailing where the weather forecast decides the plan for the day. It is not a world reserved for old salts, though. Below we explain what licences you need, where to start from, what it costs and how to shape your first sea cruise so it is an adventure, not a fight for survival.

How the sea differs from inland waters

The Baltic has no big tides, but everything else works at a larger scale than on lakes: waves build over dozens of kilometres of fetch, the wind does not die behind a tree line, and the nearest port can be hours away. That is why a sea cruise is planned from the forecast, not from a list of attractions: the weather decides whether today you sail 40 NM along the coast or tour a port town.

The second difference is the boats. Sea charter yachts are bigger, heavier and more fully equipped: ballast instead of a centreboard, stiffer rigging, VHF radio, a life raft and a full set of safety equipment. Skippering such a boat requires formal sea licences.

What licences for the Baltic

CertificateSailing yachtsZone at sea
Sailor (żeglarz jachtowy)up to 12 m hull lengthinternal sea waters and up to 2 NM from shore, daytime
Sea skipper (jachtowy sternik morski)up to 18 m hull lengthall sea waters, no zone or time-of-day limit
Yacht captainno length limitall sea waters

In practice: the sailor certificate allows daytime coastal sailing, for example on the Gulf of Gdańsk. Offshore passages with night watches require the sea skipper certificate, which takes a minimum of 200 hours of sea experience. The road to your first certificate is described in how to get the sailing licence.

No sea licence, or not confident yet? Choose a skippered charter: you helm and learn under a professional, while responsibility for the boat stays with them. It is the fastest route to sea independence.

Where to start: charter ports of the Polish coast

The biggest choice of sea yachts is in the Tricity: the marinas of Gdańsk and Gdynia are the main charter bases, with the sheltered Gulf of Gdańsk to get used to the sea. On the western coast the popular bases are Kołobrzeg, Darłowo and Świnoujście, close to Rügen and the Danish ports. A world of its own is the Szczecin Lagoon, linking the port of Szczecin with an exit to the open sea.

The Tricity coast pairs marina infrastructure with the sheltered waters of the Gulf: that is why most first sea cruises start here.

For a first independent cruise the best ground is the Gulf of Gdańsk: sheltered from prevailing winds, with a dense network of ports of refuge and short passages between them.

Season and weather on the Baltic

The sea charter season runs from May to September. July and August give the warmest water and the longest days, June and September steadier winds and empty marinas, but colder nights. The Baltic is famous for fast weather changes: a front can turn calm sailing into hard conditions within hours, which is why sea sailors plan passages with alternative ports along the way and treat the forecast as part of navigation, not a curiosity.

How much a sea charter costs

Rates for sea yachts are noticeably higher than for inland boats: you pay for a bigger, better-equipped vessel, sea insurance and marina infrastructure. Prices depend on yacht length, age, season and port, and harbour fees plus fuel come on top. Treat any listed price as a starting point and compare the full cost of the week: how to count all the components is shown in how much a yacht charter costs. At sea a higher security deposit is also standard: before you pay, check how the charter deposit works.

FAQ: sea chartering on the Baltic

Can I charter a sea yacht with the basic sailor certificate?

Yes, within limits: a sailing yacht up to 12 m, internal sea waters and a zone up to 2 NM from shore in daytime. That covers the Gulf of Gdańsk or the Szczecin Lagoon, but not offshore passages.

What is the best water for a first sea charter?

The Gulf of Gdańsk. Sheltered, with short passages and ports of refuge every few miles, yet offering real sea conditions: waves, shipping traffic and open-water navigation.

Do people sail at night on the Baltic?

On offshore passages yes, which is exactly why they require the sea skipper certificate and a practised crew. Plan your first cruise with daytime passages only though: 20-40 NM a day is a healthy starting limit.

What should I pack for a sea cruise that I never took to the lakes?

Proper foul weather gear, deck shoes that grip a wet deck, gloves, seasickness remedies and warm layers even in July. The full list is in what to pack for a charter.
